Thanks for the great work. Could you explain more file naming convention because most movies dont get tag properly. Example “The other man (2008)” or “Sherlock Holmes (2009)” or “Nine (2009)”

If I supply the imdb ID everything works fine but do I have to supply it all the time?

      April 5, 2010 at 5:56 pm

No, you do not have to supply the IMDB every time, but it does help significantly.
The naming convention I use personally would be something like “The Men Who Stare at Goats [2009] [tt1234548].m4v”
However, you don’t need to provide that in the initial file. If for some reason your lookup doesn’t succede, just fill in the IMDB field in iDentify, and click rescan.

Thats the nice thing about iD2 over iD1… you can change the lookup info without having to rename your file.

One thing to keep in mind: even though the imdb field is accepted and used for searches, iDentify does not get movie info from the IMDB, it gets it from which is moderated, community driven, and has far better quality data, as well as useable artwork.

Is there a way to have id2 auto add the file to itunes and also change filename for tv episodes, like id1 does? I cant find any settings for it

Have you tried looking in the preferences? Those features are both available for registered users. You can even specify the format you want your files to be renamed to!

Love the new look of iDentify 2. Im donated for v1 and I have no problem paying for v2 but can I just check that I can run it registered on all 4 of my Macs on a single licence ?

I have no issue with using it on multiple computers own by you. But if I find registration codes floating around the internet, they will be disabled in future versions.

No probs it won’t be going outside of my home network. I’ll send the payment tommorow 🙂

Great program ! Absolutely love the new UI (I just made a donation) ! I do however have a question. With V1, I could tag the files as soon as they were dropped on the application (I use it within a Automator workflow). But, with V2, I couldn’t find a way to automatically tag file because it’s waiting for the Process Files button to be used… but maybe I’ve overlooked a switch in the preferences ?

It is one of my top priorities for a future version. Right now though, with the first public release of iD2, there are some bugs cropping up that couldnt be found with the small testing base I had, and quashing those takes priority over new features at this point. They seem to be pretty much cleaned up at this point though. so perhaps in one of the next two releases or so we will see that.

Identify 2 seems great. Just one issue, sometimes crashes when adding multiple files, especially when adding files from different directories.

If you send me a crash report, I might be able to fix it.

Also, Being able to recognize the naming format “show – sxe – title.ext”. eg. “Tv Show – 2×04 – some episode.mp4”.

      April 27, 2010 at 12:53 pm

This format should already be working…. if its not ill have to fix it… ill look into it when I get home.

      • identifyapp
        April 27, 2010 at 3:55 pm

Just confirmed that format is working. Can you describe what is happening?

      • Jeremy Callan
        April 27, 2010 at 11:29 pm

It just says no info found (prob not the exact words). For example Tried running 30 rock episode 1 through, with the file name “30 Rock – 1×01 – Pilot.mp4”, and found no info. But it is no big deal, I can easily rename my files to the SxxExx numbering.

    • Jeremy Callan
      April 27, 2010 at 11:30 pm

Forgot to mention, when I ran the same episode through with the file name “30 Rock – S01E01.mp4” it worked fine.

Strange. I just tried both formats here without issue… Perhaps the original file name had a typo?

      • identifyapp
        April 28, 2010 at 6:44 am

Oh, and you don’t need to rename. If lookup failed. You can edit the tags (like the series name, season and episode tags) on all the files at once and click rescan.

Getting pretty consistent crashing fairly soon after start up. I’ll send a crash report your way, not sure what your email is though.

Love the new version 2, it’s awesome!!!!
One critical thing is missing from version 1 that you did mention you might add in the preview videos is custom “title naming”.
This is an absolute must for me!!
I have an older (80gb) ipod and when viewing videos in playlists it does NOT sort by TV series name just by “Title” name. (I seen my friends new ipod and it auto sorts by series names)
For example “FireFly 1×01 Serenity” would just come up as “Serenity”.
Please please please add the option to “Custom Title Names” or just add an easy option you had in version 1 of “Match File Name”

Perhaps I am missing something, but my problem is twice now I have started writing tags without being finished editing the data. I cannot find a way to stop writing the tags, except to wait until they are finished and then make the edits and then start over.

That certainly is a new one. The only thing that can initiate a write is the process files button. This wouldn’t happen to be occurring after double clicking the rescan items button while in the edit mode would it?

      • identifyapp
        May 9, 2010 at 7:39 am

Double clicking that while in edit mode was the only way I could reproduce this, since the rescan button is directly over the process files button when the view switches back.

If this is what is happening for you… a double click is unnecessary. toolbar items only require a single click.

The process files button does get disabled during a rescan… it just doesn’t seem to be getting disabled fast enough when the icon is double clicked.

I seem to have a problem with Series Titles containing an U-Umlaut (e.g. München 7), if I look the up at, all the info is there, but lookup by iDentify fails…
    Bye, Frido.

All the info is -not- on the tvdb. iDentify looks up the info, and returns everything on thetvdb available for this series, which, in this case, is only the artwork and the episode title. If you go to the tvdb and look at the individual episodes for this series, you’ll see nothing is there.

Awesome app!! This just replaced MetaX as my tagging app of choice. Keep up the great work!

This app has come a long way and this version 2 is really awesome.. thanks for the great work on it.. i think i am not the only one telling you it has replaced metax completely now. It’s not only easier to use, it is also quite a bit faster and the lookup feature with thetvdb makes it just the best app for it..

There is however 1 little annoying thingy..

I’ve set it up that it will not look for chapters or try to add them.. i just don’t care for it.. but it does add always 1 chapter, namely the entire movie/show.. however, pressing the skip button skips to the next chapter, which is the end of the file.. when there is 0 chapters, it skips a few minutes every time.. hopefully you will change this one day and set it to 0 chapters instead of 1 so it will save me to manually remove the single chapters..

other then that, my only other complaint is that i don’t have enough thumbs to put up, 2 is just not enough but i will have a talk with mom about that…

Stumbled on your site while searching for something modern and polished to tag my mp4s. Have to say this app is leaps ahead of the competition in regards to polish. I have ran into a couple of issues (crashes on rescan items after adding IMDB number and crashing on processing files), but still very nice app.

A feature request. 🙂 If I may be so bold?
    1. A way to zoom artwork to see full size or at least show the dimensions. (THANK YOU for allowing the ability to drag and drop my own art here)

Ill look into those… but right now new features are on hold until I get the crashes sorted out. I have addresssed every crash that has been reported to me. If you are experiencing crashes, I can’t fix them unless I’m told about them, and given the details I need to fix them. Id need the file names you are using and the crash reports emailed to me at arrmihardies @t
